A Day in Life with Betsy

At Shield Carers, we believe that care is more than assistance. It’s about connection, dignity, and comfort at every moment.

To help you see what our care looks like, here’s a glimpse into a typical day with one of our cherished clients, Betsy.

  • Morning Care

Betsy is 93 and lives in an assisted living community. She receives eight hours of care, Monday through Friday, with occasional weekend support. Her caregiver, Nancy, arrives at 8 a.m., greeted by Betsy’s warm smile. Nancy helps Betsy from bed to her companion chair, offers a warm washcloth to freshen up, gives her morning medications, and prepares her favorite coffee. While Betsy enjoys her coffee catching up on news, Nancy tidies her room — making the bed and emptying the commode.

  • Breakfast and Dressing

After coffee, Nancy and Betsy decide on breakfast, usually cream of wheat or oatmeal with fruit or cinnamon. By 10 a.m., Nancy helps Betsy change from nightwear to daytime clothes, supporting her independence. Betsy then transfers to her power chair, ready for the day.

  • Exercise and Relaxation

  • Nancy accompanies Betsy to the community gym for gentle exercises to maintain flexibility and circulation, filled with laughter and connection. Back in her apartment, they relax, listen to music or chatting while waiting for lunch, delivered from the dining room. Betsy enjoys favorites like baked fish or soup. Nancy ensures medication is taken and helps Betsy prepare for an afternoon nap.

  • Afternoon and Evening

Betsy wakes around 4 p.m., refreshed. Nancy assists with evening medications and brings Betsy back to the dining area for dinner. After tidying up, they watch TV together, enjoying quiet companionship. At about 8:30 p.m., Nancy helps Betsy prepare for bed, ensuring her comfort and safety, before leaving around 9 p.m.
